German express carrier trans-o-flex Schnell-Lieferdienst will step up its use of Radio FrequencyIdentification (RFID) and sensory technology in its everyday operations. The company, a
specialist in the transport of sensitive goods, said it will integrate RFID completely into itsexisting IT environment in cooperation with database and software company Oracle. “This integrationis an important step for us. It will mean that we can make even better use of RFID’s possibilitiesand make these even more accessible for our customers. Furthermore, we can develop additionalinnovative solutions”, says Wolfgang Weber, Operations Director at trans-o-flex.The new system platform of trans-o-flex will be equipped with the Oracle application server 10gand the Oracle databank 10g. A high-performance Oracle Sensor Edge server connects the differentsensors and periphery hardware of the RFID application at trans-o-flex (active transponders withtemperature sensor) to the existing IT, evaluates the data according to the desired criteria andmakes it available for the existing logistics and evaluation systems at trans-o-flex and itscustomers. The quantity of data raised by sensors and read without physical contact far exceeds theinformation content of traditional barcode technology. The new Oracle technology fulfils theconditions for processing all data safely, quickly and efficiently in future -even with new RFIDapplications.
trans-o-flex has been testing and using the possibilities of RFID and sensor technology in itslogistics solutions for more than two years. It was the first logistics service provider to bring aself-developed product based on RFID technology to the German market this year. trans-o-flexthermoaktiv provides nationwide transport of temperature-sensitive goods between 2° C and 8° Cincluding complete documentation of the temperature of each parcel.
