Post-Expo: Australia Post plans Chinese logistics expansion

Australia Post

Australia Post plans to expand its Chinese joint venture, Sai Cheng Logistics, into majormanufacturing regions within China. Sai Cheng, a joint venture with China Post, had opened its

21,000 square metre international hub near Shanghai international airport this year after being setup in 2004, Australia Post managing director Graeme John told a conference at the Post-Expo tradefair in Paris. “This is the first of a series of hubs at major manufacturing sites,” he told theWorld Postal Business Forum. These inland locations would be linked to a network of hubs at majorsea freight ports on the Chinese coastline. Sai Cheng Logistics would, however, expand gradually inorder to maintain quality levels.

The new “Kahala Alliance” of six Pacific Rim post offices that was launched earlier this yearfor international express mail was already paying off for Australia Post with a 30 per cent rise inrevenues within just a few months, John said. The alliance groups the national post offices ofAustralia, USA, China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan. Canada was now interested in joining thealliance, John reported.

Fundamentally, post offices would have to cooperate more in future in the face of increasingcompetition, he stressed. “We are being driven to cooperation by competition. Our world is socompetitive that post offices cannot stand alone. Our future is very much tied to our willingnessand ability to work together. We can create a great future together,” he told postal delegates fromaround the world.
