US govt calls on DHL crisis team to help hurricane region

DHL has received the official mandate to manage and coordinate the international flightscarrying relief supplies for the Gulf Coast region that was struck by Hurricane Katrina into Little

Rock/AK. The mission was assigned by the United States Agency for International Development(USAID), which is part of the US Department of State.

Beginning today (September 7), DHL, the express and logistics specialist of Deutsche Post WorldNet, is mobilizing its Disaster Response Team at the airport in Little Rock, Arkansas. Over thenext two weeks, relief supplies will be unloaded from planes in Little Rock around the clock andpacked into trucks bound for the New Orleans area. The Disaster Response Team will be led by ChrisWeeks. It will be supported by 20 experienced DHL employees who have volunteered to help thehurricane victims.

Last week, DHL announced that it would donate up to $500,000 of in-kind shipping services towardimmediate relief efforts and the reconstruction of the affected area. Deutsche Post World Net andDHL consider expeditious assistance and logistics support to disaster-impacted areas to be part oftheir social responsibility mission. Through transportation and logistics services, the DHL ensuresthat much-needed relief supplies like food, water and clothing are delivered quickly duringcrises.
