Geodis officially opened a new logistics platform in Budaörs close toBudapest. The site, which has been operational since the beginning of the year,initially covered 23,000 m² and was extended to its full capacity of 29,000 m² in early June. Itboasts a rail link for receiving goods and will be used as European distribution centre for anumber of key customers, white goods specialist Indesit in particular. Indeed, the platformstores Indesit products for the Eastern European market, centralised from production sites inItaly, Portugal, Poland and Turkey, and picks and ships orders to superstores, large retailers andspecialist shops in Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania. 500,000 products are handledannually, mainly washing machines, refrigerators, cooking appliances and ovens from Indesit,Ariston or Scholtès.
“Logistics is one of the most dynamic sectors in Hungary, says Miklos Csaba, CEO of GeodisMagyarorszag Logisztikai. The current HUF 200 billion (€ 800 million) market will double or triplein the coming 8 years. Due to concentration, logistic sector contribution to GDP in the Budapestarea is 30-40%.”
“Following the enlargement of the European Union and improving standards of living inEastern Europe, many Western industrials have begun reorganising their pan-European logistics outof these countries,” adds Yves Détrie, Eastern Europe Director at Geodis. “Until now, most Europeandistribution centres were located in the Benelux zone, Germany or in eastern France. Now, sites inHungary or Poland are more popular, due to more competitive logistics costs and the development oflocal markets.”
